My name is Tygo Krijtenburg, and I am a young amateur archaeologist with a deep fascination for the Carolingian period, the age of Charlemagne and his successors. Through my research and reenactment activities, I aim to discover how people in the 8th and 9th centuries lived, worked, and thought, with a particular focus on daily life, crafts, and culture.
My interest began with Viking reenactment, but I soon wanted to learn more about the people who lived in the Low Countries: the Franks and the Frisians. Within living history, the Franks are often underrepresented, which gradually led me to focus more strongly on them.
What sets me apart is my commitment to historical accuracy. In reconstructions and experimental archaeology, I strive to work as precisely as possible. This not only allows for a realistic image of the Carolingian world but also helps us learn from the past through experience.
Although I greatly enjoy making clothing and other authentic reproductions, my true passion lies in research itself. Combining historical sources with archaeological finds provides a nuanced view of the daily life of Carolingian Franks and Frisians and reveals how their culture and material world functioned. I also enjoy sharing this knowledge with others, making historical research more accessible and engaging.
In addition to my own research, I am active at events and as a volunteer at Middeleeuws Erf de Bergkamp, where I help bring history to life in both a literal and figurative sense.
For me, history is more than a collection of facts; it is a living story that can be rediscovered and experienced through careful research and reconstruction. With this website, I aim to share my findings and passion with researchers, reenactors, and interested visitors, making this fascinating period of Dutch history both accessible and inspiring.
